Oh, those flourishing, healthy strands. All of us spend so much of time touching our hair, looking at it, taking care of it. We strive to choose the best shampoo, conditioner, hair oil. We wish for the best-looking tresses and resort to styling, coloring, blow-drying, perming and straightening. We assume the secret to long and lustrous hair is that fancy shampoo or the expensive salon treatment. Well darling, it is all about your diet.

Hair is made up of keratin and is an ever-growing tissue. Fill up on healthy foods like oily fish, nuts, eggs, beans, lean meat, dairy products and citrus fruits to maintain hair health. Having a nutritionally-balanced diet indeed improves hair health in the most natural way. Apart from the diet, some other factors also affect the health of your tresses.

Swimming without a hair cap can wreck your hair health. Both salt water and chlorine are the culprits to be blamed. It leaves you hair dried and is a major cause of split ends. So, remember to put on your hair cap before hitting the water.

We have always been protecting our skin from the sun. However, the sun is just as harmful for your hair. Continuous and repeated exposure to the rays can leave your hair dry, damaged and frizzed-out. Do not forget to have a scarf around your mane the next time you step out.

Another aspect of hair care that is most often neglected is the scalp. It is the bedrock for the hair follicles. The follicles are present more than a millimeter deep in the scalp. It is important to keep the scalp clean and moisturized. Natural hair masks can help to exfoliate and nourish the scalp. The result- flourishing hair that’s full of life, which you would obviously love to touch.

An expensive shampoo is definitely better, is the common notion. However it is imperative to check the label and understand the ingredients that go into your shampoo. Products containing detergents like sodium lauryl sulfate, ammonium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate can damage your hair. Switch to natural, plant or herb-based products instead.

It’s cool to style your hair to match the latest fashion trend. But treatments like rebonding and perming alter the internal structure of the hair strands and can lead to permanent damage. Excessive blow-drying and ironing can also make the hair brittle and fall out easily.

Healthy tresses are definitely a window to a healthy body. Take proper care of them and flaunt your wonderful locks!
